- Industrial and Antifreeze Applications: Used as a non-toxic alternative to ethylene glycol for automotive and HVAC antifreeze, as well as aircraft de-icing fluids, especially where accidental contact with food or potable water systems might happen.
- Cosmetics and Personal Care: Functions as a moisturizer and skin conditioner in lotions, shampoos, and hand sanitizers by locking in moisture and preventing bacterial growth
- Pharmaceuticals: Serves as an inactive ingredient or solvent to carry and stabilize active ingredients in oral, topical, and ineluctable medications.
- Food Industry: Acts as a humectant and solvent in baked goods, soft drinks, frostings, and flavor extracts to retain moisture, prevent caking, and distribute colors evenly.
- Fog and Vaping Products: Utilized in electronic cigarettes to produce vapor and in theatrical or firefighting training fog machines to create artificial smoke.
Other Uses for Propylene Glycol
Propylene Glycol is also considered a “Humectant” which is why it is commonly used in toothpaste. A humectant basically will absorb water and continue to stay moist. This is helpful in toothpaste to maintain moisture and prevent it from drying out.
